JUWI Renewable Energies has unveiled plans to construct a 120 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant to supply clean energy to Sasol and Air Liquide in South Africa. The project, developed in collaboration with independent power producers (IPPs) TotalEnergies, Mulilo, and Reatile Group, marks a significant milestone in decarbonizing energy-intensive industries.

The solar PV plant will be located in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, a region known for its abundant solar resources. This facility is expected to generate over 300,000 MWh of electricity annually, which will directly support the operations of Sasol and Air Liquide. The clean energy generated will replace fossil fuel-based electricity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 250,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

Sasol, one of South Africa’s largest chemical and energy companies, has set ambitious sustainability targets, including a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Air Liquide, a global leader in industrial gases, shares similar goals, aiming to reduce its carbon intensity and align with international climate action efforts. By transitioning to solar energy, the two companies are demonstrating their dedication to sustainability while ensuring a reliable energy supply for their operations.

The project will play a crucial role in supporting South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which aims to deploy 26 GW of new renewable energy capacity by 2030. The solar plant will also enhance energy resilience in the Northern Cape, reducing dependence on coal-powered electricity.

Beyond environmental benefits, the construction phase will generate hundreds of jobs, fostering economic development in local communities. The collaboration between JUWI, Sasol, Air Liquide, and its IPP partners demonstrates how industries can leverage renewable energy to achieve climate goals while maintaining operational efficiency.
