Red Rocket has successfully commissioned a 669 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal, delivering a new source of clean, on-site generation for its headquarters and the surrounding V&A Waterfront precinct.

The installation comprises approximately 1,100 solar modules and is supported by a 458 kWh battery energy storage system, enabling greater flexibility and resilience in power supply. The system is fully operational and supplies electricity both to Red Rocket’s offices and into the wider V&A Waterfront network under a structured power purchase arrangement.

The project was delivered by Red Rocket’s internal project and construction management team, led by Project Manager Jamie Pothier and Project Coordinator Michael Layman. Electricity generated by the system is fed into the V&A Waterfront precinct as part of an agreed offtake framework, reinforcing the role of distributed generation within dense urban commercial environments.

“This project required innovative planning and close coordination with multiple stakeholders,” said Layman. “Once approved, construction was completed within three months, reflecting the strength of collaboration between Red Rocket, Transnet, the City of Cape Town, and the V&A Waterfront.”

Red Rocket relocated to its new offices at the Cruise Terminal in 2024, with rooftop solar identified early as a strategic opportunity. The available roof space enabled the development of a commercial-scale solar installation aligned with the company’s broader renewable energy portfolio, which has expanded significantly across both solar and wind projects in 2025.

Project delivery was supported by Emergent Energy, whose collaboration played a key role in execution. “The partnership was instrumental in delivering the project successfully,” said Pothier, noting the shared technical approach and close coordination between teams.

Emergent Energy Project Manager Justin Franke added that the project demonstrated the value of hands-on collaboration and clear communication in delivering complex rooftop installations within active commercial environments.

The Cruise Terminal Solar Plant highlights the growing role of embedded generation and storage in urban energy systems, while demonstrating how commercial buildings can contribute meaningfully to local clean energy supply.
