Ezra Group Launches 20 MW Solar Power Project With 14 MWh Battery Storage In South Sudan
South Sudan has inaugurated its first large-scale solar power project, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition toward renewable energy. Developed and financed by Ezra Construction & Development Group Ltd., the 20-megawatt (MW) solar power plant and accompanying 14-megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) represent the country’s first official renewable energy source.
The launch event in Gondokoro was attended by high-level government officials, including Vice President for the Infrastructure Cluster, Taban Deng Gai, and Minister of Energy and Dams, Peter Marcello Nasir Jelenge. Other dignitaries present included the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Dams, Sultan Lam Tungwar Kueigwong, Deputy Governor of Central Equatoria, Paulino Loduku, and Eritrea’s Ambassador to South Sudan, Yohannes Teklemichael.
The 20 MW solar plant will supply electricity to approximately 16,000 households in Juba, integrating clean energy into the national grid. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions, lower electricity costs, and enhance grid stability. The BESS system ensures a reliable power supply, allowing stored solar energy to be used when needed. To maximize efficiency, the project utilizes advanced Huawei components, including smart inverters, smart transformers (STSs), and smart loggers.
The South Sudan Electricity Corporation (SSEC) and the Ministry of Energy and Dams played a critical role in ensuring the project’s seamless integration into the national grid. The Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO), a public-private partnership between Ezra Group and SSEC, is responsible for distributing the generated electricity to consumers in Juba. JEDCO receives bulk energy from Ezra Construction & Development Group and distributes it across the region. The newly commissioned solar plant now accounts for 19% of JEDCO’s total electricity distribution, complementing existing thermal power sources.
The government-owned Nisitu Solar Plant is also expected to contribute to South Sudan’s energy mix in the future, supplementing existing thermal power and supporting a more stable and sustainable energy supply.
Ezra Construction & Development Group is actively working on expanding renewable energy capacity in South Sudan, with a focus on delivering cleaner and more affordable electricity to a larger segment of the population. The company remains committed to supporting South Sudan’s long-term energy transition, reducing costs, and promoting sustainability.
