Solar Mini-Grid Project to Power University of Lagos
The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated $66.65 million USD (₦100 billion) in the 2025 budget to deploy solar mini-grids at key federal universities, including the University of Lagos (UNILAG). This initiative, under the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, aims to provide reliable and cost-effective electricity to public institutions while reducing dependence on diesel generators.
Once the budget is approved and signed into law, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) will begin implementation. The mini-grid at UNILAG is expected to enhance energy security, reduce electricity costs, and improve sustainability on campus.
The Nigerian government is prioritizing renewable energy as part of its broader effort to modernize power infrastructure and support economic growth. The project will ensure stable power supply to students, faculty, and essential university facilities.
