Scatec awarded 288 MW Mercury Solar 2 Project in 7th REIPPPP
Scatec ASA has been named a preferred bidder for the 288 MW Mercury Solar 2 project as part of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) under Bid Window 7. The project, once operational, will contribute significantly to South Africa’s energy supply and operate under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The REIPPPP is a cornerstone of South Africa’s strategy to transition to a sustainable energy mix, addressing the country’s pressing need for additional power generation capacity. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has announced that commercial close for projects in Bid Window 7 is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2025.
Commenting on the milestone, Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog stated, “This marks another significant achievement for Scatec in South Africa and for the renewable energy transition in the country. Today’s award reaffirms our standing as a leading renewable energy player in South Africa. We applaud the South African government’s commitment and dedication to the renewable energy procurement programmes.”
Scatec will hold a majority equity stake of 50.9% in the project. Beyond ownership, the company will play a pivotal role in delivering the project by providing engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. Once completed, Scatec will manage the ongoing operations and maintenance (O&M) and asset management (AM) of the solar facility.
This project adds to Scatec’s growing portfolio in South Africa, reflecting the country’s potential for large-scale renewable energy development. The REIPPPP continues to attract private investment and drive the deployment of clean energy, contributing to South Africa’s goals for a more reliable and sustainable power supply. Projects like this underline the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing the country’s energy challenges while fostering economic growth and environmental sustainability.
