Photon Energy announced plans to expand its operations in South Africa by developing a 250-MW concentrated solar photovoltaic (CSPV) plant paired with a 150 MW/1.8 GWh long-duration thermal hydro storage system. The project aims to enhance energy stability and sustainability in the region.

The facility will be located in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal, and will leverage innovative technology developed by Australia’s RayGen Resources Pty Ltd. This system combines concentrated solar power and heat generation with water-based thermal storage. Photon Energy holds a 5.44% equity stake in RayGen, underscoring its commitment to the technology.

The company has secured 1,200 hectares (2,965 acres) of land for the project and recently received favorable grid connection terms. Photon Energy expects the project to achieve ready-to-build status by the second quarter of 2026.

Key next steps include collaborating with South Africa's state utility and grid operator, Eskom, to design and implement technical solutions for grid integration. Photon Energy is also advancing environmental and regulatory requirements, with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025. Zoning processes are currently underway, and the company is pursuing designation as a Strategic Integrated Project (SIP), which could streamline development.

“By deploying the advanced RayGen technology and fostering strong collaboration with Eskom and local stakeholders, we are committed to contributing to South Africa’s energy stability and delivering sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and local communities,” said Photon Energy Group CEO Georg Hotar.

This project represents a significant step forward in addressing South Africa’s energy challenges, combining cutting-edge technology with a focus on environmental and community benefits.
