On November 17, 2024, the Central African Republic (CAR) officially inaugurated the Danzi Solar Park, a 25 MW solar energy facility with battery storage. Located in Danzi village, approximately 18 km from the capital, Bangui, the solar park is expected to significantly enhance the country’s electricity generation capacity and provide power to 250,000 people in the capital.

The project was funded through a grant from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA). It marks a substantial step forward in CAR’s efforts to address its energy challenges, with the potential to generate over $4 million annually for the national electricity company, Energie Centrafricain (ENERCA).

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadéra highlighted the importance of the Danzi Solar Park as the country’s initial move toward achieving universal access to clean, reliable energy. He noted that the project aligns with CAR’s goals for economic recovery and sustainable development.

The need for improved energy infrastructure in the Central African Republic is critical. The country has one of the lowest electrification rates globally, with only 35% of Bangui residents having access to electricity. Nationally, electrification rates are even lower, at 8% in urban areas and just 2% in rural communities.

The Danzi Solar Park is complemented by the broader Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Project (PARSE), which aims to expand electrification beyond Bangui. This initiative focuses on developing mini-grid projects and distributing solar kits to households, businesses, and public institutions across the country.
