Ignite Power to acquire ENGIE Energy Access, forming Africa’s largest distributed renewable energy provider
Ignite Power, a Abu Dhabi-based provider of distributed renewable energy (DRE) solutions, has signed a Share Purchase Agreement to acquire 100% of ENGIE Energy Access (EEA), one of Africa’s most prominent and impactful energy companies. Once finalized, the transaction will create Ignite Energy Access, Africa’s largest provider of the full spectrum of DRE solutions, with operations spanning 14 countries and delivering clean energy to over 15 million people.
The transaction, still subject to regulatory and antitrust approvals, is expected to close in the coming months. The acquisition marks a transformative milestone for Ignite Power, doubling its African footprint and significantly enhancing its capacity to deliver clean, affordable energy to underserved markets.
With ENGIE Energy Access’s extensive presence across Africa, strong customer base, and proven operational expertise, this acquisition positions Ignite Power to become a central force in accelerating energy access on the continent. The newly formed Ignite Energy Access will combine EEA’s local knowledge and operational excellence with Ignite’s scalable business model and digital capabilities, setting a new benchmark for sustainable energy delivery in Africa.
“This transaction represents a historic opportunity to address the energy needs of millions of Africans,” said Yariv Cohen, CEO of Ignite Power. “ENGIE Energy Access has built an exceptional legacy of innovation and sustainable impact. By combining their strengths with our own, we are creating a full-spectrum energy access company capable of transforming lives, driving economic growth, and empowering communities across Africa. This acquisition accelerates our vision of providing sustainable, affordable energy to 100 million people by 2030.”
The acquisition comes at a time when the cost of solar panels and batteries has dropped significantly, and mobile payment systems are widely adopted. Ignite Power leverages these trends to provide affordable, reliable, and easy-to-install solar solutions for homes, businesses, schools, farmers, and other institutions. By expanding its footprint, Ignite will address the needs of Africa’s 600 million people currently living without access to electricity, as well as those reliant on unreliable and unsustainable power grids.
The transaction will expand Ignite Power’s total addressable market to over 250 million people, bolstered by economies of scale, enhanced operational efficiency, and advanced digital platforms for mobile payments, fleet management, and data analytics. These tools ensure unmatched reliability and affordability, driving portfolio performance across the expanded footprint.
Ignite’s recent success in securing $15 million in funding from Afrigreen to grow its Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar projects highlights strong investor confidence. With over 50 megawatts of deployed capacity and a comprehensive range of distributed solar solutions, the combined Ignite Energy Access will be uniquely positioned to serve both rural and urban markets, offering solutions tailored to diverse customer needs.
