The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has announced the completion of a 5MW floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) power plant on the Bui Reservoir.

The floating solar system forms part of a hybrid power generation setup, combining solar and hydropower resources to supply electricity to Ghana’s national grid. This project complements the existing 50 MW ground-mounted solar farm and the 404MW Bui hydropower plant, enhancing the region’s renewable energy capacity.

The project is owned and operated by BPA, a state-owned entity responsible for the development and management of the Bui Hydroelectric Project and other renewable energy initiatives. The electricity generated is supplied to Ghana's national grid, with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) serving as the primary off-taker. ECG distributes and sells electricity to end-users nationwide.

BPA secured a $24 million green loan in 2023 to finance the expansion of its solar-hydro hybrid projects, including the floating solar facility. The funding supports Ghana’s Renewable Energy Master Plan, which aims to achieve 10% of the country’s electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030.

The use of floating solar panels reduces land use and limits environmental impact by preserving forested areas and minimizing land development. To address fluctuations in solar energy production, a 30MWh Battery Energy Storage System has been installed. This system ensures a stable power supply to the national grid, mitigating the intermittencies typically associated with solar power generation.
