Appian Capital Expands Rosh Pinah Solar Park with 11 MW to Power Mining Expansion
Appian Capital Advisory LLP (Appian) has unveiled plans to expand the capacity of the Rosh Pinah Solar Park (RPSP) in Namibia from 5.4 MWp to 16.3 MWp after acquiring a majority shareholding in the solar plant and sharing ownership with Emesco Energy. This expansion aims to provide a reliable renewable energy source for the Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation’s mining expansion project, RP2.0.
The upgraded solar facility will supply 30% of the power required for RP2.0 under a fixed nominal rate 15-year offtake agreement. By securing stable and cost-effective renewable energy, the project is set to reduce Rosh Pinah Zinc’s overall energy costs by 8%, improving the mine’s long-term financial sustainability.
RP2.0, a major expansion of the Rosh Pinah Zinc mine, is designed to increase annual ore production from 0.7 million tons to 1.3 million tons. With the project now over 60% complete, integrating renewable energy will play a crucial role in supporting its operational efficiency and sustainability goals.
The expanded solar plant is expected to contribute to the mine’s decarbonization efforts by reducing its carbon footprint by 14,000 tons of CO₂ per year, equivalent to planting over 20,000 trees. This aligns with Appian’s broader clean energy investment strategy, which seeks to enhance sustainability across its portfolio.
Rinus Stydom, Managing Director of Emesco Energy, stated: “This investment by Appian is a pivotal step not only in expanding the RPSP renewable energy plant but also expanding Namibia’s energy generation sector in general. Emesco looks forward to collaborating with Appian and commends their clear commitment to decarbonize, drive down the cost of energy, and increase energy supply diversity within their portfolio.”
