The Farwhenta Mini-Grid, a solar-powered electricity system developed by Energicity and co-funded by the Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa (BGFA), is now operational in Farwhenta, Gbarpolu County, Liberia. The project represents a major milestone in expanding clean energy access in off-grid rural areas.

With a total installed capacity of 26.88 kWp, the mini-grid supplies electricity through an ABC overhead line network, allowing for future scalability as energy demand grows. This initiative is part of Energicity’s commitment to deploying up to 30 solar-based mini-grids in Liberia under an agreement with BGFA, signed in May 2022.

The inauguration event in Farwhenta was attended by local residents, Energicity staff, mini-grid workers, Liberian government officials, and representatives from the Swedish embassy in Monrovia. Speaking at the launch, Energicity CEO Nicole Poindexter emphasized the transformative potential of the project:

"The Farwhenta Mini-Grid is an example of how sustainable energy solutions can change lives. Through our partnership with BGFA and the Liberian government, we are bringing clean, reliable, and affordable electricity to rural communities, supporting economic growth and improving livelihoods."

The mini-grid will support local businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities, providing a stable and cost-effective alternative to diesel generators. It is expected to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with Liberia’s long-term renewable energy goals.

In addition to enhancing energy security, the project creates employment opportunities in mini-grid operations, technical support, and community engagement.

Swedish Ambassador to Liberia, Karl Backéus, praised the initiative’s role in fostering sustainable development: "Bringing electricity to rural Liberia is a crucial step toward economic progress. Sweden is honored to support this initiative, which strengthens local businesses, improves public services, and empowers the people of Farwhenta."

The Farwhenta Mini-Grid is part of BGFA’s broader effort to establish over 95,000 energy connections across Liberia, ensuring that more communities gain access to clean and affordable electricity in the years to come.
